Buy off-the-shelf when your process is standard; build when your process is your edge. In the first call I will tell you plainly if a purchasable product already solves your problem, because a bad-fit build costs me a reference.
What does custom software cost from one engineer vs an agency?
Agencies price in project managers, account managers, and bench time. Here the person you talk to writes the code, so small tools land in the four figures and serious multi-system builds are quoted fixed-price after discovery, usually far below agency quotes for the same scope.
Who owns the code?
You do. Every engagement ends with source code in your repository, documentation, and a handover session. You are never locked to me to keep your own tool running.
What stack do you build on?
